Ministry again mulls canceling Rusia Petroleum's Kovykta license

Russia's Mineral Resources Agency may revoke oil company Rusia Petroleum's license for the Kovykta gas condensate field, the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry said Friday.

The ministry said it had instructed the country's environmental watchdog to inspect Rusia Petrolium’s compliance with the terms of its license for the Kovykta field.

The ministry said that depending on the results of the inspection, a request could be sent to the Mineral Resources Agency to cancel Rusia Petroleum's license.

The inspection may take about two weeks, the ministry said.

Russian authorities have been considering canceling Rusia Petroleum's Kovykta license for several years.

Rusia Petroleum is a subsidiary of oil major TNK-BP.

In 2007, TNK-BP reached a preliminary deal to sell its 62.8% stake in Rusia Petroleum, which holds the license for the Kovykta field, to Gazprom. The completion of the deal has been repeatedly delayed.

The Kovykta field, located in the Irkutsk Region, is one of the world's largest gas fields with proven gas reserves of about 2 trillion cubic meters.
